What is L-Glutathione (Reduced)? Glutathione is a sulfur-containing tripeptide made up of the amino acids cysteine, glycine, and glutamate. As the body’s “master antioxidant,” glutathione neutralizes damaging free radicals and peroxide molecules and boosts the utilization and recycling of other antioxidants, namely vitamins C and E, alpha lipoic acid, and CoQ10. There are two forms of glutathione, reduced glutathione or L-glutathione, is the active form, and oxidized glutathione (GSSG), the inactive form. However, GSSG can be reactivated in the body by glutathione reductase to be used again. Glutathione is an antioxidant that plays an important role in cellular defense, nutrient metabolism, and regulation of cellular events (such as gene expression, DNA and protein synthesis, cell proliferation and apoptosis, signal transduction, cytokine production and immune response, and protein glutathionylation) throughout the body [2, 3].
